Radio Mutation

Garage Punk Resources

The original Radio Mutation kept a links page: labels, record shops, music blogs and webzines, radio shows and podcasts. It was one of the more useful things on the site, and it is the sort of page that stops working the moment nobody maintains it.

This is its replacement. It is deliberately short. A directory of five thousand dead links helps nobody; the aim is a page that stays accurate.

Where to find the music

Bandcamp remains the single most useful place for this music. Most of the labels and bands worth hearing in these genres sell directly there, and the money goes to the people who made the record.

The Internet Archive holds captures of defunct underground music sites, the original Radio Mutation among them. Our archive pages were rebuilt from those captures. The coverage is partial and uneven, because a crawler saves what it happens to save, but if a show you remember has vanished it is the first place to look.

Mixcloud carries DJ sets and radio shows under licensing arrangements built for exactly that kind of programme. Several shows on the old network were posting there while the site was still running. Eleven recovered episode pages carry a Mixcloud follow link in the footer, next to iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and Facebook; they come from Big Enchilada, Record Roulette Club, Stop and Listen and the specials strand, and they run from August 2016 to December 2018. These shows had been distributing themselves in more than one place all along, which is a large part of why so much of the audio outlived the domain. What is still up there now, we have not checked.

Radio and podcasts

The tradition the Radio Mutation network belonged to is still alive. Independently produced garage, surf and psych radio shows continue to be made and posted week after week, most of them by people doing it for nothing. Our archive documents the shows that ran here; the ones still running are easiest to find through Mixcloud and through the shows’ own sites.

This page is unfinished, on purpose

We would rather add entries slowly and check them than publish a long list we cannot stand behind. If you run a label, a shop, a radio show or a fanzine in these genres and think it belongs here, tell us on the contact page. If you make records, the submit music page is the better door.
